Buddha Tooth Relic & Dambulla Cave Temple Sightseeing

Post Breakfast, its sightseeing tome around Kandy.
Begin your day with a visit to the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site Buddha Tooth Relic Temple – populary called the Temple of the Tooth. According to Sri Lankan legends, when the Buddha died in 543 BC, his body was cremated in a sandalwood pyre at Kushinagar and his left canine tooth was retrieved from the funeral pyre by his disciple, Khema. Khema then gave it to King Brahmadatte for veneration. A belief grew that whoever possessed the tooth relic had a divine right to rule that land. Legend states the Abhayagiri vihāra was first appointed custodianship of the relic when it was brought to the island after the conflict in Kalinga. The relic came to be regarded as a symbolic representation of the Buddha and it is on this basis that there grew up a series of offerings, rituals, and ceremonies.
Post the Tooth Temple visit we, travel to another amazing UNESCO Heritage Site of Dambulla cave temple. Approx 2 hours drive from Kandy, this is a sacred pilgrimage site for 22 centuries, this cave monastery, with its five sanctuaries, is the largest, best-preserved cave-temple complex in Sri Lanka. The Buddhist mural paintings (covering an area of 2,100 m2 ) are of particular importance, as are the 157 statues. We return back to Kandy possibly after witnessing one of the most beautiful sunsets from the mountain top.

Day visit to Nuwara Eliya

After breakfast, another exciting day for sightseeing around Kandy.
Today we do a day visit to the famous hill station town – Nuwara Eliya. The British discovered Nuwara Eliya in the 19th century. They turned it into a quaint town that mimicked life in England. The town is still known as “Little England”. It has a racecourse, the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, and Victoria Park. Nuwara Eliya is mostly famous for the tea production in Sri Lanka. Apart from the tea plantations; Horton Plains National Park, Gregory Lake, and Sita Temple are some of the popular places to see in the town.
En-route we will stop at the Hanuman Temple. Located on a summit of the picturesque mountain in Ramboda, the Sri Bhakta Hanuman Temple is one of the important Hanuman Temples in Sri Lanka. It is one of the important sites of the Ramayana Trail in Sri Lanka. An 18ft statue of Lord Hanuman towers at the entrance which is the tallest Hanuman statue in Sri Lanka. This temple was constructed in 1999 and it is believed that Hanuman was searching for Sita Devi and still there are some Ramayana facts available in this area e.g. a village called “Ravana Goda” close to this Bhakta Hanuman Temple. The Tamil word for Ramboda, Rampadai, means “Rama’s force”, this is why Ramboda is believed to be the area where Rama collected his troops. Also it is believed this was the place where Lord Hanuman took rest while on his way to search Sita.
Today the lunch is on your own. Post lunch, we will visit Sita Mata Temple. Legend has it that Sitaji was held captive and hidden in this spot by King Rama to protect her from the demon king Ravana according to the Epic Ramayana. The stream that runs close to this spot is believed to be the place where Sita bathed and the rock beside it is supposed to be the place where she sat praying.
On your return back to Kandy we will visit one of Sri Lanka’s favourite Tea Factory where you can enjoy a hot cup of Cyclone Tea.
