About this tour
This is a country where the rice is red and where chillies aren’t just a seasoning but the main dish.
It’s also a deeply Buddhist land, where monks check their smart phones after performing a divination, and where giant protective penises are painted beside the entrance to many houses.
Yet while it visibly protects its Buddhist traditions, Bhutan is not a museum. You will find the Bhutanese well educated, fun loving and well informed about the world around them.
It’s this blending of the ancient and modern that makes Bhutan endlessly fascinating

Discovering Thimphu – A Day of Culture & Heritage
After a hearty breakfast, it’s time to explore the vibrant capital of Bhutan. Thimphu is home to some of the country’s most fascinating sights, and today’s itinerary is filled with cultural gems and breathtaking landmarks.
We begin with a visit to one of Bhutan’s most iconic attractions – the Great Buddha Dordenma, a majestic 52-meter-tall statue of Shakyamuni Buddha that overlooks the valley. Built to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, this colossal statue is believed to fulfill ancient prophecies, bringing peace and prosperity to the world.
Next, we head back towards Thimphu city, stopping at the Zilukha Nunnery, a serene and historic site where Buddhist nuns dedicate their lives to spiritual practice. From here, we continue to the Takin Sanctuary, home to Bhutan’s national animal – the Takin. This unique creature, with the body of a cow and the head of a goat, is a must-see for wildlife lovers!
Our final stop for the day is the Memorial Chorten, built by the Fourth Mother Queen in memory of the Third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. Known as Thimphu Chorten, this stunning white stupa with its golden spires and prayer wheels is a significant religious landmark and a place of deep spiritual devotion for locals.
For lunch, you have the freedom to explore Thimphu’s culinary scene! We highly recommend trying authentic Bhutanese cuisine at one of the many charming restaurants around the central market square. Enjoy a leisurely meal before returning to the hotel.
The evening is yours to relax and unwind. Take a stroll around the city, visit local shops, or simply enjoy the peaceful ambiance of your hotel.

Journey to the Enchanting Punakha Valley
After breakfast, we bid farewell to Thimphu and set off on a scenic drive towards the breathtaking Punakha Valley.
Our route takes us through the majestic DochuLa Pass (3,050m), where the landscape transforms before your eyes. As we ascend, lush blue pine forests give way to vibrant rhododendron trees in bloom, creating a picture-perfect setting.
At the summit of DochuLa Pass, we stop to admire the spectacular panoramic views of the Eastern Himalayas. Here, you’ll also find the Druk Wangyal Chortens, a stunning cluster of 108 white stupas, built by Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk, the eldest Queen Mother, in memory of King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the Fourth Druk Gyalpo. This sacred site, surrounded by misty peaks and pristine forests, offers a moment of reflection and serenity.
Before we continue, take time to capture a group photo against this awe-inspiring backdrop. Then, warm up with hot snacks and a cup of tea or coffee, enjoying the crisp mountain air.
From here, we begin our descent into Punakha Valley, where the air grows warmer and the landscape shifts to lush rice fields and winding rivers. Upon arrival, we stop for a delightful riverside lunch, soaking in the peaceful surroundings.
As the sun sets, we check in to our serene riverside resort, where you can unwind and enjoy the tranquil beauty of Punakha.

A Day in Punakha Valley
After breakfast, we visit one of Bhutan’s most magnificent architectural marvels – Punakha Dzong, also known as Pungthang Dewa Chhenbi Phodrang (“The Palace of Great Happiness”). Situated at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, this majestic fortress-monastery is a masterpiece of Bhutanese craftsmanship, with its intricate woodwork, towering whitewashed walls, and golden rooftops.
Our next stop is the Chimi Lhakhang Temple, famously known as the Temple of the “Mad Monk”. This sacred site has a fascinating legend, which our guide will eagerly share as you take a short yet slightly steep walk to the temple. For those who prefer to skip the walk, this is a great opportunity to explore the local handicraft stores, offering unique Bhutanese artifacts found only in this region.
Post an eventful day in Punakha, return to the resort by afternoon and spend time at the local market or by the riverside, soaking your feet in the cool waters of Punakha chu.
The evening promises a memorable get-together with cocktails, a bonfire, and delicious snacks, followed by a warm and hearty dinner under the starry Bhutanese sky.

Covering 47 square miles (120 km²), this park acts as a biological corridor between Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park and Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Park. The park is home to an incredible variety of birds and plants, including 46 species of rhododendrons, 18 of which are native to Bhutan. If you’re visiting between mid-March and early August, you’ll witness these vibrant flowers in full bloom, painting the landscape in brilliant colors.
